National Residents' Rights Week 2008: October 5-11, 2008

Recipe for Home: Defining and Creating Home in Long-Term Care Facilities

Residents' Rights Week is designated by NCCNHR: The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care and is celebrated the first full week in October each year to honor residents living in all long-term care facilities, including nursing homes, sub acute units, assisted living, board and care, and retirement communities. It is a time for celebration and recognition offering an opportunity for every facility to focus on and celebrate awareness of dignity, respect and the value of each individual resident.

The Residents' Voice

NCCNHR is excited to share a new feature of Residents' Rights Week---- the Residents' Voice. The Residents' Voice is an opportunity for residents from facilities across the country to share their ideas about this year's theme, "Recipe for Home: Defining and Creating Home in Long-Term Care Facilities" with other residents, families, ombudsmen, community members, and nursing home staff. Take a minute and get insight on what "home" means to the residents.

Examples of How Ombudsman Programs Celebrate Residents' Rights Week

Ombudsman programs across the country have been busy planning Residents Rights' Week celebrations! They range from luncheons to rallies to parties to educational programs. We want to take this opportunity to highlight ombudsman program activities --- both to celebrate those programs and what they're doing as well as to give you ideas for next year!  View their activities!

If your ombudsman program planned a special event, wrote an article to the local newspaper, held a party, etc. let us know so we can share with your colleagues around the country! Send your information to Milissa Lake Spencer at mlakespencer@nccnhr.org.

Thanks to all the ombudsmen who have worked so hard to promote the rights of the residents they serve! Happy Residents' Rights Week!
