Project Description:
The
New Jersey Office of the Ombudsman for the Institutionalized Elderly has
received a oneyear grant from the Health Care Foundation of New Jersey, to
conduct Palliative Care training and organize Palliative Care Teams in 30 New
Jersey Nursing Homes. Dr. Anne Burger, Chair of the Palliative Care Program at
NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, will serve as faculty for two (2) intensive training
conferences to be held in April and May. Followup sessions will be conducted by
Ombudsman staff, using "mentor" teams from the Office's pilot project
in Palliative Care, conducted in 1999.
Impact:
Improved quality of care and quality of life for nursing home residents;
improved understanding of pain management and palliative care techniques by
doctors, nurses, social workers, administrators, and clergy staff.
