Project Description:

The New Jersey Office of the Ombudsman for the Institutionalized Elderly is completing a three­year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to conduct bio- ethics training and ,' organize Regional Long Term Care Ethics Committees throughout New Jersey. Rev. Deborah Whisnand from the Methodist Hospital System in Houston, Texas, served as faculty for eleven (11) intensive training conferences which were attended by more than 700 health care professionals, representing more than 250 facilities. Four (4) follow-up sessions educated participants in such areas as the interface between law and ethics, decision-making capacity, and the role of culture and spirituality. Fifteen (13) regional long-term care ethics committees are operating, doing education and case consultations.

Impact:

Improved duality of care-and-quality of life for' nursing home residents; improved understanding of the importance of ethical decision making in all aspects of nursing home care.
