"Evening in
Paris" dance coordinated by local
ombudsman.
Karen Stenson, Local
Ombudsman Coordinator helped to coordinate a dance, “Evening in Paris” for all the residents in Skilled Nursing
Facilities (SNF) throughout
San Luis Obispo
County
. The
county and most owners of SNFs in the area co-sponsored the event.
Approximately 60 residents, many staff, family members and volunteers
helped make an incredible evening. This
was the first time that San Luis Obispo
County
put together an event for all residents in SNFs. One resident in his late 50s/early 60s, who is a double amputee, put on
his prosthetic legs (which he had previously refused to wear for months) to
dance. Many of the staff assisted
residents to get dressed in their finest clothing, with make-up, hair-do’s,
nail polishing, and other preparations. Staff
also volunteered to help with kitchen duties, serving, and caring for residents
during the event. Most of the staff
were Certified Nursing Assistants whose contributions were nothing less than
extraordinary and pivotal in the evening’s success.
The cost of the event was nominal since most of the party wares were
donated or paid for by foundation money. Mrs.
Stenson and co-sponsors have decided to make the dance an annual event!

Local Ombudsman Inducted into Women's Hall of Fame
On March 20, 2003, San Mateo County Ombudsman, Ruth-e Bennison
was inducted into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame.
The Local Ombudsman Coordinator for
San Mateo
County, Tippy Irwin is extremely proud of Ruth and her accomplishments.

the Ombudsman Program. Today she
serves as a volunteer Medi-Cal expert. She
commented, “Everybody ought to volunteer.
I think it is a part of your life. If
you don’t volunteer, you are going to miss something. I am giving back something of my life, which I am sure along the way many
people gave to me.” The Hall
of Fame inductees have a strong sense of dedication.
Residents in long-term care facilities benefit immeasurably by their
dedication and commitment. Congratulations,
Ruth-e!
