NATIONAL FAMILY CAREGIVER MONTH People giving care encouraged to contact state or local offices for the
elderly
(Washington, DC) U.S. Senator Larry Craig, the ranking member of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, reminded the nation today that November is
National Family Caregiver Month. "Family caregivers are generous and compassionate people and it is only
appropriate that in November, the month of Thanksgiving, we give thanks and acknowledge those who provide care for others who need help caring for
themselves," Craig said.
Last year Congress added $125 million to establish the new National Family Caregiver Support Program to assist those who provide care at home for their
loved ones. "Providing care for someone who is sick or dying can be emotionally,
physically and psychologically taxing. Under the new program that started this year, all
states, with help from federal funds, should be offering basic sets of
services to help family caregivers," Craig said. Those services should include
information and assistance, training and counseling, and respite care to
enable family members to take a temporary break from their caregiving duties.
Earlier this year Sen. Craig held a hearing in Washington, DC, and a series
of field hearings in Idaho about the new Family Caregiver Support Program. "I was encouraged to learn that states and local Area Agencies on Aging
are working hard to develop programs to help the seniors in their communities.
But I suspect that the Family Caregiver Support Program is an effort many who
need it don't know about. If you are providing care for an older person and need
help, you should contact either your state or local Area Agency on
Aging," Craig said.
In the Gem State those interested in obtaining family caregiver support
should contact the Idaho Commission on Aging by calling (208) 334-3833, or
their local Idaho Area Agency on Aging by dialing toll-free (877) 471-2777. Those outside
of Idaho should log on to http://www.nasua.org/members.htm to locate their state's agency on aging.
