Ombudsman Role in Nursing Home Closures and Natural Disasters. Approximately 264,400 nursing home and assisted living residents live in the states that were affected by Hurricane Katrina in September 2005. We have compiled a list of resources for these residents and their family members, as well as ways for others to help. We are also collecting news stories, especially about nursing home residents, as events unfold. The site will be updated regularly as more information becomes available.
