Natural Disasters

Ombudsman Role in Nursing Home Closures and Natural Disasters. This Ombudsman Resource Center Document (2000) includes "closure kit," information on transfer trauma, and recommendations for state and local ombudsmen that also applies to transfers in natural disasters. http://www.ltcombudsman.org//uploads/OmbinNHclosures.pdf.

Emergency Procedures. Information on storing vaccines and other perishables in power outages. See how to implement emergency procedures and find resources.

Hurricane Preparedness. (September 2003)  Find useful tips and resources.

Approximately 264,400 nursing home and assisted living residents live in the states that were affected by Hurricane Katrina in September 2005.  We have compiled a list of resources for these residents and their family members, as well as ways for others to help.  We are also collecting news stories, especially about nursing home residents, as events unfold.  The site will be updated regularly as more information becomes available.

AoA Report on Ombudsman Activity Related to Hurricane Isabel.  This October 2003 report by Sue Wheaton shows that ombudsmen can and do play an important role in helping emergency personnel know how and where to check on long-term care facilities when disaster strikes. Read full report including ombudsman program storm preparation and actions.
