NASUA Transmittal Letter Nov. 8, 2002 NASUA Transmittal Letter Nov. 8, 2002
To: Ombudsman
From: Mark Miller, Ombudsman Specialist, NASUA
Date: Friday, November 8, 2002
As you know, a curriculum is being developed for your use in equipping local
ombudsmen and volunteers to help consumers benefit from the Nursing Home Quality
Initiative (NHQI). The final curriculum is being reviewed for accuracy, clarity,
and ease of use. Due to the proximity of the national rollout, a CMS approved
excerpt from the curriculum is attached for your immediate use.
This excerpt contains the sections of content and two PowerPoint
presentations which are most directly applicable to Long-Term Care Ombudsman
Program work. Use these to assist local ombudsmen and consumers. Please give any
feedback to Sara Hunt regarding these tools at: shuntgero@aol.com.
The remaining sections of the curriculum and additional resources in the
attached sections will be posted in the designated section of the National
Long-Term Care Ombudsman Resource Center's web site (www.ltcombudsman.org)
as they
are approved. Please check the site regularly. When the entire curriculum is
completed, state and local ombudsmen will receive a hard copy of the curriculum
as well as a CD version.
This information is being distributed by NASUA as part of the NHQI Pilot
Project, supported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the
Administration on Aging, in order to foster partnerships between the Long-Term
Care Ombudsman Program and the Quality Improvement Organizations, ensure that
the LTCOPs are involved in the national rollout of the Quality Indicators (QIs),
and to help older people and their families use the QIs as they make nursing
home placement and quality of care decisions. Information on the NHQI can also
be found on the CMS web site at www.cms.hhs.gov/providers/nursinghomes/nhi.
