Letters of Support Needed for Research (Aug.
2001)
Dr. Ann Burgess and Dr. Tim Baker are seeking funding to
continue their important work on sexual abuse in long term care
facilities. Letters of support for this research are needed. They would be
interested in talking to anyone who experienced such a personal and egregious
violation. For more information on the project and how to contact the
researchers, click
here.
New Assistant Secretary for Aging
Josefina Carbonell was confirmed August 1 by the Senate as the
new Assistant Secretary for Aging in the Department of Health and Human
Services. Her nomination had been unanimously approved by the Senate Committee
on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on July 25th. The
Administration on Aging is the arm of the Department of Health and Human
Services that oversees many provisions of the Older Americans Act, including
those pertaining to the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. Ombudsmen around the
country have anxiously awaited the naming of AoA's new head. For background
information, see the Miami
Herald's announcement of Carbonell's nomination.
