Culture Change Training

Maryland

Category: Culture Change

Project Description:

As a result of the CMS St. Louis Summit in 2005, the Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene convened a work group whose members attended the Pioneer Institute that was held in Chicago, IL that August.  The work group included representatives from the LCA, nursing home trade associations, nursing home staff, CMS, the Delmarva Foundation (QIO), and the State Ombudsman.  The focus of he Institute was to train participants in implementing culture change in nursing homes and elsewhere.  The Consultant with Delmarva is the former director of the LCA.

Project Impact:

  1. Maryland has developed a Nursing Home Quality Committee (same members) that meets on to implement the culture change movement in the state.
  2. For the first time ever, CMS has conducted a training for the statewide Ombudsman Program in MD regarding the 8th SoW and other federal initiatives.
  3. The Committee has developed a campaign, “From Good to Great,” to develop or enhance culture change initiatives.  Educational material is being developed and promoted at the Governor’s Conference on Vital Aging in May.
  4. The QIO met with the statewide Ombudsman Program in January to update us on the initiative.
  5. Things are changing, slowly but surely.
