2006 Annual State Ombudsman Training Conference
Success in Ombudsman Programs

Volunteer Retention

Massachusetts

Category: Program Management

Project Description:

This is an example of local program management that has resulted in a re-energized volunteer corps. The program has 23 certified volunteers, a full time Program Director and a part time Assistant Program Director, 21 nursing homes and 3 rest homes.   The volunteers recommend and develop the monthly meetings based on their experience and interests.  The goal is two fold: to involve the volunteers in planning and participation and to recognize their individuality. This is accomplished by utilizing the volunteers’ life experiences and education. Volunteers are encouraged to pick topics, recommend speakers, and create presentations. The program began in 2003.

In 2005 training sessions included: Disaster planning for facilities; best practices for Alzheimer’s Units, complaint investigations and quality initiatives.  2005 speakers included: Director of homeless shelter, Department of Public Health investigator; MassPRO  the local QIO

Project Impact:

The volunteers are invested in the program and know they make a difference in the facilities. The volunteers’ active engagement has supported a longer commitment to the program. Volunteers who go away seasonally return to be active volunteers
