2006 Annual State Ombudsman Training Conference Success in Ombudsman Programs
Collaboration in Workgroup on Challenging Behaviors
Connecticut
Category: Program Management
Project Description:
The CT Workgroup on Challenging Behaviors was established in January of 2004. The original impetus of the workgroup was based on the LTCOP experience in the numbers of discharges by nursing facilities to ERs /Psychiatric Hospitals and subsequent refusals to readmit. Since its inception, the Workgroup has established the www.CWCB.org website. It includes the Workgroup mission, membership, and committee work as well as related resource material available. While the group was convened by the Office of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman based on the Program’s work in nursing homes, the topic has spurred consideration of membership expansion to include Assisted Living, Residential Care homes, as well as home and community based services including family caregivers.
Project Impact:
The impact of the Workgroup is expected to be resident-centered and to support caregivers in a variety of long term care settings. This goal can be accomplished by addressing the individual resident and the manner in which they personally experience their long term care needs, along with quality of life interests.
Each Workgroup Committee addresses a different function. The Care and Case Committee considers unusual, challenging cases and recommends Best Practices. The Training Committee plans and implements an annual training conference to support a variety of caregivers in their work with residents. The Policy, Regulations and Legislation Committee considers issues / related data to determine the most appropriate course of action and make contributions to resolve such issues ( this can include legislative recommendations). The Membership Committee continues to review representation from a variety of interested stakeholders.
