Broadening Spectrums: Sharpening Skills, Knowledge, and Association at The Rock, was the theme of the 20th Annual LTC State Ombudsman National Training Conference held April 21-24, 2007 in Little Rock, AR. State Ombudsmen from 35 states and US Territories joined together to network, share best practices, and dialogue with national experts on issues related to long-term care and ombudsman practice. Session topics included Advocacy in the Assisted Living Arena; Admission Contracts - Advocacy Strategies to Protect Consumers; The Ombudsman's Role in LTC Facility Closures; and Advancing Excellence: Encouraging Consumer Involvement in Quality Discussions. State Ombudsmen also heard from special guest speakers Mark Malcolm, Pulaski (AR) County Coroner on Forensic Investigation of Nursing Home Deaths; and renowned geriatrician, Dr. David Lipschitz, who spoke on Breaking the Rules of Aging. AoA National Ombudsman, Frank Burns, updated the ombudsmen on AoA's Choices for Independence program.
